Dion blasts Tories over Commonwealth climate deal

Liberal Leader Stephane Dion says Canada appears to be "backward" when it comes to tackling climate change issues at the Commonwealth summit in Uganda.

Dion told CTV Newsnet on Saturday that Canada has blocked what would have been a significant deal setting out greenhouse gas emissions targets by Commonwealth countries. He and other critics say the Conservative government used its clout at the summit to stop environmental progress.

"We want our country to be part of the solution, not part of the problem," Dion said.

"With Mr. Harper, we will not be part of the solution, it is clear."

Prime Minister Stephen Harper says he still wants binding targets in any new global climate change treaty -- he just wants them for every country.

Rangers shrug off Barça battering knowing destiny is in their hands

A VISIT to the Nou Camp can be a humbling experience for any visiting team but for a Rangers side grounded in reality by their manager Walter Smith, any damage sustained in their widely predicted defeat at the great stadium on Wednesday night was never going to be of the irreparable variety.

The 2-0 defeat to a Barcelona side who appear to be regaining the kind of fluid and incisive form which makes them the bookmakers' favourites to win the Champions League was certainly nothing for Smith's players to beat themselves up about.

More than 100 Buddhist monks march in Myanmar for first time since crackdown

YANGON, Myanmar - Two monks in Myanmar say more than 100 Buddhist monks marched and chanted in a northern region of the country for nearly an hour Wednesday

The march marked the first public demonstration since the government's deadly crackdown last month on pro-democracy protesters The monks in Pakokku made no political statements and shouted no slogans, but their march was meant as a sign of support for the earlier, anti-government rallies led by monks in many of Myanmar's cities in September.

Those demonstrations were crushed when troops fired on protesters Sept. 27-28 in a crackdown that left at least 20 people dead by the government's count.

Opposition groups say as many as 200 people may have been killed.

The crackdown by Myanmar's Junta government drew considerable international criticism.

For the. . . .

Not another T-shirt from Acapulco, my closet is already overflowing, I beg my children and grandchildren. Not another book, I have a dozen stacked up that I haven't gotten around to reading.

So what can you give saba and savta, grandpa and grandma, who've been living in the same place for 35 years, have a house full of tchotchkes and every conceivable kitchen gadget?

I don't want the latest iPhone, videogame or computer attachment. It takes me forever to figure these things out, and I'd rather spend the time swimming.

My wife and I have been trying for years to convince our descendants that we'd love them just as much -- maybe even more -- if they didn't bring any gift for Chanukah or, for that matter, birthdays, anniversaries, Mother's Day, Father's Day or Mexican Independence Day.

Effective Internet Job Ads

Getting the best results from internet job ads is something of an art. Whilst we can not deny that the underlying attractiveness of a job will be a factor in a job ads success online, it is not the dominant factor.

The internet is unparalleled in its ability to communicate with specific focussed groups, and whilst internet job advertising is not in principle a volume game, like many marketing activities, advertising jobs on the internet is all about maximising target audience exposure and (relevant) conversions. However, because of the nature of the internet as a medium there is unfortunately a certain amount of noise that must be tolerated in order to secure the higher value results.

Preparing job ads that deliver results on the internet is not as straightforward as cutting and pasting a job description, even though many recruiters seem to think that is how it is done.

City approves money for YMCA study

With a standing room-only crowd supporting the possibility of a YMCA-operated indoor recreation facility, the Crossville City Council approved spending approximately $28,000 on an in-depth marketing and feasibility study to determine if such a facility would be successful. Two council members elicited groans from supporters of the project when they voted to approve a motion that no further city funds would be expended on the project. That motion was later withdrawn.Local resident Gail Compton, who has spearheaded support for this project for the last year, spoke to the council and outlined some of the e-mails and phone calls she had received in support of the possibility of the construction of a YMCA facility. The facility is estimated to cost $8 to $9 million dollars and the services and activities included would be based on the results of the survey.Compton said the group is asking for city funding of the survey and added, "The benefits will far outweigh the costs of the survey."Also addressing the council were Scott Curry and Lindsey Meyers of the local high schools.
