| There are two Gordon Browns living in Downing Street
To his fury, Gordon Brown was accused of plagiarising phrases from the speeches of American politicians in the address he gave to his party conference. That allegation certainly cannot be levelled against the lecture 'On Liberty' he delivered to an audience at the University of Westminster. Says one of the Prime Minister's friends: 'He wrote it all himself.' That I believe. The copyright on the title of the Prime Minister's lecture belongs to John Stuart Mill. But the content and style were clearly all Mr Brown's own work. Indeed, they couldn't be anyone else's work. I can think of no other leading Anglophone politician who could or would deliver such a self-consciously intellectual speech. .

DIRECTIONS: Bounce City part of city's rebound Justin Schneider Take off your shoes and enter the world of Bounce City. It's stocking feet only, but don't worry, everything is soft. Founders Scott and Michelle Hester opened Bounce City on Aug. 15. It caught the eye of many passers-by with the enormous yellow climbing wall situated out front. Bounce City is filled with inflatable toys for children and adults, but it's about more than having fun. "It's an old football saying. What do you do when you get knocked down?" said Scott Hester, 43. "Get back up. Anderson has been down for a while, but it's on its way back up." Businesses large and small have found reasons to invest in Anderson.
Scotland's New £125k Slogan...Welcome To Scotland
A £125,000 campaign to replace Scotland's Best Small Country In The World tag has been unveiled. And the exciting new catchphrase dreamed up by top advertising brains is..."Welcome to Scotland". Artwork featuring the message will be displayed at all Scots airports from St Andrew's Day, accompanied by different national and local messages. The decision to rebrand Scotland's "points of entry" follows a pledge by First Minister Alex Salmond to scrap his predecessor Jack McConnell's slogan "Scotland, the Best Small Country in the World". Salmond said that was too downbeat and typified the "Scottish cringe". The new message was devised with help from one of Scotland's top advertising agencies, The Leith Agency. Extra national slogans include "World Leader in Learning" and "First to Introduce Universal Education" as well as "Home of Golf" and the snappy: "Home of Europe's Fastest Growing Life Sciences Community".
Group Protests Consumerism
A small group of folks met at the Liberty Pole in Rochester to protest shopping and consumerism. They rode bicycles to the major retailers in Henrietta on what they dubbed "Buy Nothing Day." They hoped to encourage Black Friday shoppers to think outside the box when it comes to gift giving. "You can make things. You don't have to spend a million bucks. You don't have to violate your budget. You can get out there and do things that are meaningful to people. You don't buy affection with high price tags," said Jack Spula, anti-consumer. Riders throughout the country pedaled home the same message in other cities. jme/ay Email this Story to a Friend Print Friendly Version .

Firefighters Recount Student Rescue
Rochester Fire Chief John Caufield said the fact that Michael DiCocco closed his door before going to bed the night of the fire may have saved his life. It prevented smoke and heat from quickly overtaking the room. The fast work of rescuers also helped ensure that DiCocco is spending Thanksgiving with his family. R News photojournalist Scott Barstow captured DiCocco's dramatic rescue on videotape. We have not made that video public until now. Until we knew DiCocco had survived, we chose not to show it. DiCocco left the hospital Monday, ten days after being for a burned trachea and other injuries. He's now home in Canastota. R News spoke to DiCocco's family and invited them to be interviewed for this report. They declined, but encouraged us to share the rescue video with the firefighters who helped save Michael's life.

Diego and Friends Stop in Rochester
A popular children's cartoon comes to life on a Rochester stage this week. "Deep inside the jungle, where nature's runnin' wild, comin' to the rescue is a very special child." Go, Diego, Go! visits the Auditorium Theater this weekend. The live- action production takes preschoolers on an interactive journey inspired by Latin America's environments and animals. It features animal rescuer Diego, his animal sidekick Baby Jaguar, his sister Alecia and famous cousin Dora the Explorer. "It's so cool to hear all the audience members scream and yell and laugh and sing along," said Diego and Dora. "And, you can be as loud as you want -the louder the better, but it's great, it's kinda like a combination of a rock concert and a Broadway show, only for the whole family." Go, Diego, Go! has six live performances from Friday through Sunday.
