Carolyn Hax: She put desires out there; now he's hiding

Dear Carolyn: I have been friends for two years with a guy I volunteer with in the community. I told him (in a roundabout way) that I wanted to be more than friends. He then avoided me for almost two weeks and said he's more interested in developing himself as a person. When he told me this, I accepted that he just wanted to be friends. But now he seems to avoid me or approach me with kid gloves. Do I let him continue to treat me this way until he sees from my behavior that I'm not devastated by his lack of romantic interest?

Toyota unveils driving simulator

Toyota has launched a new driving simulator which tests safety features by recreating real road scenarios.

The giant 15ft high and 23ft wide dome swivels, tips and swishes on a rail and a Lexus inside it provides the sense of acceleration, vibration and sound of driving.

Inside, 360 degree computer graphics of roads and landscape - complete with signs, pedestrians, stores and faraway Japanese Mount Fuji - are synchronised to move with the simulated driving.

The 78-ton simulator, which is the first non-stationery machine of its kind, will be used to test safety features, such as beeps warning of oncoming vehicles, without endangering drivers.

Engineers will also use the machine to analyse how drowsiness and intoxication affect driving.

Pacific eyed for Japanese study abroad program

Editor's Note: The writer was a 2007 Sasakawa Pacific Island Journalism Fellow. This story was written while on the fellowship in Japan.TOKYO, Japan-"Why don't you learn English in paradise?" is the tag line used in Japan by Tokyo-based South Pacific Free Bird to promote its unique study abroad programs. The appeal mixing visions of white sand beaches and learning English is working. The company has sent over 2,000 Japanese to study English as a second language in Fiji.Founded three years ago, South Pacific Free Bird has grown from less than 50 students in the first year, to a projected enrollment of 3,000 this year, and about 7,000 next year. Students sign up for courses taking a week to a month, and learn the local culture by staying with families in a home stay program.South Pacific Free Bird will open a third campus on Fiji's Viti Levu island next month.

Gasoline prices on the rise again

Hang on to your pocketbook and tuck back more money in the gasoline budget. The cost of gas at stations across the country has been rising at an alarming pace.
According to the U.S. Department of Energy, gasoline prices are expected to climb higher if the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) doesnt increase production.
Mixed signals from OPEC just before the Thanksgiving holidays contributed to the drop in oil futures after several weeks of oil approaching $100 a barrel.
Gas prices around Pontotoc range from $2.97 to just above $3 for the lowest grade unleaded.
This price increase comes as many families are getting ready for the holiday season, and will most likely make an impact on how much money consumers will spend on Christmas.
Use the following tips to help economize your trips and save on gasoline.

Winter car care can prevent problems

With high temperatures dropping into the low 40s last week, more and more people have started preparing their vehicles for the winter months.

Lester Webb, owner of Lester's Automotive Repair of Fallon, said simple maintenance for colder times can prevent future problems.

Before the weather gets too cold, Webb said batteries should be checked and antifreeze filled to correct levels.

Webb said many people are unaware of the need for winterized windshield washer fluid. In colder weather, Webb said, regular windshield water fluid will freeze almost instantly when used.

Tire pressure should also be checked more often as tires lose pressure faster in colder weather.

In Fallon, he added, chains are not needed because the county does not receive much snow.
