Chinadaily.com.cn sharing the Olympic spirit

More than 200 Beijing Olympics cheer-squad volunteers listened carefully to a sports expert explaining the finer points of basketball. The associate professor from Capital Institute of Physical Education talked about its history, the rules and the etiquette of watching the game, made hugely popular in China by Yao Ming.

"When the US coach asked: 'When would China's basketball players catch up with the US team?' the Chinese coach answered: 'When the US ping-pong team plays as well as our team'."

Laughter erupted among the group, which included Jia Shuying, a 60-year-old woman who was part of last Friday's special cheer-squad gathering. She did not go to work that day, and instead rode her bicycle to her neighborhood residence committee to attend the meeting. Like everybody in the room, she donned a white cap and pink T-shirt, which had "Cheering from Beijing workers" written on the front.

Celebrating Thanksgiving with the family

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BP)--Thanksgiving takes on a new meaning when the whole family prepares for the celebration. When Thanksgiving rolls around, most families enjoy spending time with loved ones. For Christian households, this holiday takes on a spiritual emphasis and includes recognition of the source of the blessings they enjoy year-round -- a loving God.

This year, throw out the idea that the Thanksgiving kitchen belongs only to Mom and Grandma. Every member of the family, both young and old, can pitch in to prepare the food and create an atmosphere that will make your celebration memorable.

CALLING ALL COOKS

When you think about Thanksgiving, it is the food on the table that comes to mind first. The first rule for a successful family feast is to relax! Involving children in food preparation takes longer and generates more of a mess, but it is the best way to spend the whole day together.

Chapter 10: Only 1 in 5 high school graduates are ready for college

High school seniors throughout Illinois are half a year from graduation and college, the culmination of 13 years of public schooling.

The state is half a year from completing its constitutional duty to give these seniors a free and efficient education.

Taxpayers know the schools weren't free.

Data show the schools weren't efficient.

Between August 1996 -- when today's seniors began first grade -- and June, taxpayers funneled nearly $200 billion into the Illinois public school system.

Yet, just 21 percent of Illinois seniors leaves the billion-dollar system ready for college -- or the workplace.

In the suburbs, the results aren't much better.

Bilbray bill proposes stricter immigration enforcement

A new bill by Rep. Brian Bilbray, R-Solana Beach, would require employers to verify that all of their new workers are in the country legally. One of the most vocal critics of illegal immigration in Congress, Bilbray said the bill also would call for an increase in the number of U.S. Border Patrol agents, intensify aerial surveillance at the nation's borders and increase the number of detention facilities.

But critics say some of its supporters have co-sponsored the bill simply to appear tough on illegal immigration before the November elections.

Since the bill was introduced Nov. 5, its list of co-sponsors has grown to 112, including 44 Democrats, making the bill more likely to move forward in the House, Bilbray said. The bill's main sponsor is North Carolina Democrat Heath Shuler."Congress has the responsibility to take action and respect the mandate given by the American people to enforce our laws, secure our borders and address illegal employment," Bilbray said.

Assertive debugging: correcting software as if we meant it

Assertive debugging is a new way to make embedded systems ensure their own health by having your code monitor itself.

Debugging is an art that needs much further study .... The most effective debugging techniques seem to be those which are designed and built into the program itself—many of today's best programmers will devote nearly half of their programs to facilitating the debugging process on the other half; the first half... will eventually be thrown away, but the net result is a surprising gain in productivity.

—Donald Knuth, The Art of Computer Programming1

As Don Knuth implies, debugging is a much-neglected subject, and we're paying a terrible price for that neglect. We've made little progress in debugging methods in half a century, with the result that projects everywhere are bogged down because of buggy software.
