More than 100 Buddhist monks march in Myanmar

Buddhist monks in Myanmar have staged their first protest march since last month's brutal government crackdown. More than 100 monks marched and chanted Buddhist prayers for nearly an hour before returning to their monasteries without incident. The protest happened in a northern town which is a center for Buddhist learning with more than 80 monasteries. The monks did not shout any slogans or utter any political statements. The town was the scene of some of the pro-democracy protests last month that were stamped out when troops opened fire on demonstrators, despite international pleas for negotiations and reform.

Gasoline prices on the rise again

Hang on to your pocketbook and tuck back more money in the gasoline budget. The cost of gas at stations across the country has been rising at an alarming pace.
According to the U.S. Department of Energy, gasoline prices are expected to climb higher if the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) doesnt increase production.
Mixed signals from OPEC just before the Thanksgiving holidays contributed to the drop in oil futures after several weeks of oil approaching $100 a barrel.
Gas prices around Pontotoc range from $2.97 to just above $3 for the lowest grade unleaded.
This price increase comes as many families are getting ready for the holiday season, and will most likely make an impact on how much money consumers will spend on Christmas.
Use the following tips to help economize your trips and save on gasoline.

ASU looks to close Johnson Street through campus

A process to close a portion Johnson Street to all vehicle traffic except emergency personnel has begun.

Angelo State University President Joseph C. Rallo said today that a letter has been sent to the city of San Angelo from the Texas Tech University System notifying the city of its support of ASU's intention to close the street that runs through the campus, in accordance with the ASU Master Plan. ASU joined the Tech system on Sept. 1 but the master plan, developed well before the merger, already called for the closure.

According to the letter, sent by Michael A. Ellicott, Tech vice chancellor for facilities planning and construction, a team of consultants will be in San Angelo on Nov. 20 to conduct a traffic study.

Under the plan, Johnson will be closed between Vanderventer Street on the north and Dena Drive on the south.

Police blitz roads over weekend

Law enforcement agencies blanketed the Yamhill Valley over the Thanksgiving holiday, aiming to deter intoxicated drivers.

While there were no crashes resulting in serious injuries during the official holiday period, running from 6 p.m. Wednesday to 11:59 p.m. Sunday, Oregon State Police troopers, Yamhill County sheriff's deputies and McMinnville police officers combined to make 11 arrests for driving under the influence of intoxicants. The state and city processed four each, the county three.

Alcohol was a factor in two crashes investigated by the sheriff's office, according to Capt. Ken Summers. He said the highest blood alcohol concentration level was .24, three times the .08 marking the presumed level of intoxication in Oregon.

"We're pleased we did not have more," he said.
