Group Protests Consumerism

A small group of folks met at the Liberty Pole in Rochester to protest shopping and consumerism.

They rode bicycles to the major retailers in Henrietta on what they dubbed "Buy Nothing Day." They hoped to encourage Black Friday shoppers to think outside the box when it comes to gift giving.

"You can make things. You don't have to spend a million bucks. You don't have to violate your budget. You can get out there and do things that are meaningful to people. You don't buy affection with high price tags," said Jack Spula, anti-consumer.

Riders throughout the country pedaled home the same message in other cities.

City Council Sticks w/ Rural/Metro

Rochester City Council decided Rural/Metro Ambulance will continue serving Rochester.

But Mayor Bob Duffy is questioning how the decision-making process played out. He had recommended Monroe Ambulance for the job.

A panel charged with fielding proposals for the city's next ambulance contract chose Monroe over Rural/Metro, based on a better fleet, technology, service record and the fact it was a local, woman-owned company.

Rural/Metro reportedly threatened to pull out of Rochester if it lost the contract. That would have cost 200 union jobs.

City Council gave Rural/Metro a six-month extension and it revised its proposal. City council called it nearly equal to Monroe's.

The mayor says this process compromises the city's system of awarding contracts. "I think we can sometimes send the wrong message," Duffy said.

Chinas largest companies are mostly state run and will have to be privatized before they can straddle the world eye-to-eye with European and American giants. Chances are Chinese privatization will produce hybrid firms, with characteristics of both state and private enterprises. However, this blending has produced European powerhouses such as Airbus which has only survived with regular injections of state capital, yet has proved a surprisingly effective competitor to Boeing.

As I recall one of the guiding principles of the Contact Group for the final status of Kosova(o) status was/is: The status proposal must be acceptable for the majority of Kosova(o). I also recal that Kosova(o) majority representatives already said NO to the Hong Kong model. So I think that talking about the Hong Kong model any longer is just a waste of time. The time has come to move to the next level and finish up the status question. (Simple Mind, 11. November 2007 12:19) .
