| Seinfeld saved my career: Jerry Stiller
In early 1993, Jerry Stiller's career was fading. A 40-year veteran of stage, TV and movies, the entertainment industry was no longer interested in hiring the New York-born actor. His manager fired him. "My career was disappearing," Stiller, who celebrated his 80th birthday in June, told AAP in an interview in Los Angeles. Stiller and his wife, Anne Meara, were one of America's most loved comedy teams in the 1960s, appearing on the Ed Sullivan Show more than 30 times. "We had done a lot of commercials and made money, raised our children, but then bingo, we were out of fashion," Stiller recalled. "People wanted to see young people in the movies." Then, in May 1993, his fortune changed. The sitcom, Seinfeld, after five seasons, was one of the hottest shows on TV and its creators Jerry Seinfeld and producer-writer Larry David, were searching for an actor to be Frank Costanza, father of the show's balding loser, George Costanza, played by Jason Alexander.
Penalty points double for speeding drivers
Motorists face being banned from driving for only two speeding offences under a government plan to double the fixed penalty for exceeding the limit by a wide margin, The Times has learnt. Those caught driving at 45mph or above in a 30mph limit are likely to receive a higher-rate fixed penalty of six points and a £100 fine, up from the existing flat rate of three points and a £60 fine. Ministers want to send the message that excessive speeding will lead more quickly to an automatic six-month driving ban for totting up 12 points within three years. More than 1.1 million drivers have six or more points on their licences and, under the new law, could be banned immediately for one more offence. .

As I recall one of the guiding principles of the Contact Group for the final status of Kosova(o) status was/is: The status proposal must be acceptable for the majority of Kosova(o). I also recal that Kosova(o) majority representatives already said NO to the Hong Kong model. So I think that talking about the Hong Kong model any longer is just a waste of time. The time has come to move to the next level and finish up the status question. (Simple Mind, 11. November 2007 12:19) .
Winter car care can prevent problems
With high temperatures dropping into the low 40s last week, more and more people have started preparing their vehicles for the winter months. Lester Webb, owner of Lester's Automotive Repair of Fallon, said simple maintenance for colder times can prevent future problems. Before the weather gets too cold, Webb said batteries should be checked and antifreeze filled to correct levels. Webb said many people are unaware of the need for winterized windshield washer fluid. In colder weather, Webb said, regular windshield water fluid will freeze almost instantly when used. Tire pressure should also be checked more often as tires lose pressure faster in colder weather. In Fallon, he added, chains are not needed because the county does not receive much snow.
Police blitz roads over weekend
Law enforcement agencies blanketed the Yamhill Valley over the Thanksgiving holiday, aiming to deter intoxicated drivers. While there were no crashes resulting in serious injuries during the official holiday period, running from 6 p.m. Wednesday to 11:59 p.m. Sunday, Oregon State Police troopers, Yamhill County sheriff's deputies and McMinnville police officers combined to make 11 arrests for driving under the influence of intoxicants. The state and city processed four each, the county three. Alcohol was a factor in two crashes investigated by the sheriff's office, according to Capt. Ken Summers. He said the highest blood alcohol concentration level was .24, three times the .08 marking the presumed level of intoxication in Oregon. "We're pleased we did not have more," he said.
