Don't get caught in the cold

While snow and ice are a familiar part of life for most Canadians, there are a few simple precautions every driver should remember before heading out in the cold. According to the experts at Uniroyal Tire, these driving tips could save you time and money while helping keep you safe.

* Drive slowly and cautiously. Approach hills, intersections and bridges with care and be aware of other drivers around you.

* Avoid sudden braking. Try to apply pressure to your brakes only while your car is going straight, not during a curve. Don't pump your anti-lock brakes.

* Accelerate slowly after stopping. Remember that traction is greatest just before the wheels spin. Putting gentle pressure on the gas pedal when starting is the best way to maintain traction and avoid skids.

* Anticipate turns, curves and lane changes early and steer with smooth, careful movements.

A degree is no guarantee of full-time jobs or equal rights

A quarter of graduates do not have full-time jobs more than three years after getting their degrees, according to government figures.

The Higher Education Statistics Agency, which examined the career progression of 24,000 people, also found that 20 per cent of those who were employed were not working in graduate occupations.

Women were more satisfied with their careers, although they were paid less than men in their first jobs. "There was a £1,000 difference in the average salaries of male and female graduates who had studied full-time, although a higher proportion of men were in higher-paid work," the report said.

The two Rochester men accused of brutally beating Hector Merced, 48, to death last weekend were back in Rochester City Court Friday.

The two men are charged with second degree murder.

Police said they kicked and punched Merced and beat him with a blunt object.

Police found Merced on the porch of a Flower City Park home about 3 a.m. Saturday morning.

Merced's family members say the two men were his acquaintances. "That's what hurts the most," Merced's sister, Marisol Carrasquillo said, “You never know who or when anything is gonna happen. So, it's just hard because you can't even trust the friends that you do have.

More than 100 monks in new Burma march

Witnesses say more than 100 chanting monks in northern Burma are marching for the first time since a crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrations.

The monks, in the town of Pakokku, did not shout slogans or make political statements as they marched for about an hour.

The town was the scene of some of the monk-led pro-democracy protests that were stamped out after troops opened fire on demonstrators during the September 26-27 crackdown.

The monks started their march at Shwegu Pagoda in Pakokku, a centre for Buddhist learning with more than 80 monasteries about 630km northwest of the country's commercial centre of Rangoon.

They marched for nearly one hour chatting Buddhist prayers without incident, and then returned to the respective monasteries, two monks said in telephone interviews.
