Carolyn Hax: That awkward period after tipping one's hand

DEAR CAROLYN: I have been friends for two years with a guy I volunteer with in the community. I told him (in a roundabout way) that I wanted to be more than friends. He then avoids me for almost two weeks and says he's more interested in developing himself as a person. When he told me this, I accepted that he just wanted to be friends. But now he seems to avoid me or approach me with kid gloves. Do I let him continue to treat me this way until he sees from my behavior that I'm not devastated by his lack of romantic interest?

– J.

DEAR J.: If his interest in "developing himself as a person" didn't completely stanch your ardor, then surely the follow-up dance of adolescent avoidance did. Maybe this guy is a stealth relationship genius.

WELL SAID MICK! ALL THIS TALK OF"I PAY MY MONEY, SO I'LL HAVE A POP IF I WANT," ETC, ETC, IS SELFISH AND DELUSIONAL. WE ARE ALL HUMAN.SIR LAWRENCE OLIVIER ADMITTED TO NEVER HAVING CONQUERED STAGE FRIGHT COMPLETELY. IF THE GREATEST ACTOR OF ALL TIME CAN FAULTER UNDER HUMAN SCRUTINY, IS IT SUPRISING OUR YOUNG LADS CAN BE FRAGILE. GET BEHIND THE TEAM AND KEEP THE DE-ENERGISING NEGATIVITY OUT OF THE MOL.

I was at the match, sitting pitch side, with young children nearby, and too be honest the only negative aspect they picked up on was Big Mick and his childish response to the crowd!! Foul mouthed and agressive body language on numerous occassions, great example, best way to show the fans how to re-act? Not!

I think as manager of the club he should maybe lead by example, no point in crying about the fans if he can't control his own emotions.

Owner in third bid to make Highland castle his home

THE owner of a historic Highland castle is making his third attempt to secure permission to turn it into his home.

Lex Brown has been involved in a long-running battle with Historic Scotland to restore and reroof the 14th century Castle Tioram, in Moidart. He has previously criticised the "Stalinist" attitude of the agency, which favours the landmark being conserved as a ruin.

Hamburg Board Hears Two Proposals for Long Term Building Plan

The Hamburg School Board will vote during its next regular meeting on Monday, December 17, on one of two proposals for long term facilities plans. Hamburg Superintendent of Schools Keith Alexander presented the proposals to the board during the regular meeting on Monday night, November 12.

The two proposals do not affect current facilities projects already scheduled including the renovation and additions to the athletic facilities at the high school, the addition of new science labs and classrooms at the high school, new classrooms in Portland and the addition of a physical education facility in Wilmot. Work on the athletic facilities will begin late this year or early next year and will be paid for by district funds.

The Portland and Wilmot projects, the metal roof for the high school and new high school science labs and classrooms are planned for the 2009-2010 year.

Miami Herald editors, writers question Book Fair authors

Authors who write about the world, especially Cuba and the rest of the Americas, are well-represented among the speakers at this year's fair. Here, Miami Herald writers and editors pose questions to a small sampling of these writers.

1. Fabiola Santiago is The Miami Herald's art critic and is author of the forthcoming book ''Reclaiming Paris'' (Simon & Schuster). She asked this question of Francisco José Moreno, author of ''Before Fidel: The Cuba I Remember'' (University of Texas Press, $19.95):

Q. In ''Before Fidel,'' you say that it is impossible to understand Cuba without taking into account ''the interconnected rhythm'' of politics and music, and thus you begin to describe the cultural and historical backdrop culminating in the Cuban Revolution. Extending that idea of music and politics as a moving force, what do you see in the future of Cuba ``After Fidel?''

A: The references to music in my recollections of Cuba were metaphorical -- with something of an allegorical twist.
