Over the hill? No reason to stay off the ‘net

For most people in Viet Nam the internet belongs to the young, to business people, to officials; but recently, the elderly have discovered the use value of being able to comfortably engage with new technology.

Though the internet now connects billions of people across the world, it only became popular in Viet Nam around seven years ago. Since then it has spread across the nation, making Viet Nam one of the countries with the most rapid internet-spread worldwide. And as people use it more, they require it more, so that now, everyone from students to engineers, in rural to urban areas now find the internet an indispensable element in their daily lives.

Some elderly are still slow to catch on. Many don't know what the internet is, and others wonder how it works.

For me, my grandparents were surprised when I told them I'd learned from Yahoo Messenger what my brother has been up to while studying abroad.

New Toyota driving simulator tests car safety

SUSONO, Japan -- A driver in Toyota's new safety testing simulator gets a 360-degree, synchronized view of the road and landscape, signs, pedestrians, street-side stores and faraway Mount Fuji.

But the drive is only make-believe.

The simulator has a Lexus inside a 15-foot high, 23-foot diameter dome that provides the sense of acceleration, vibration and sound of driving a car.

Why Teens Are Such Impulsive Risk-takers

Teenagers and adults often don't see eye to eye, and new brain research is now shedding light on some of the reasons why. Although adolescence is often characterized by increased independence and a desire for knowledge and exploration, it also is a time when brain changes can result in high-risk behaviors, addiction vulnerability, and mental illness, as different parts of the brain mature at different rates.

Election date set as Musharraf heads for Saudi Arabia; Opposition ponders vote boycott, Khan launches hunger strike

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (CNN) -- As Pakistan President Gen. Pervez Musharraf left Pakistan for a two-day visit to Saudi Arabia, his country's chief election commissioner announced that voting for Pakistan's national assembly and its four provincial assemblies will take place on Jan. 8.

Opposition parties, including those of former prime ministers Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif, have not said if they will participate in the January elections. They've indicated they would boycott elections as long as the emergency declaration and suspension of the constitution ordered by Musharraf last month remained in place.

Former cricket star and now opposition party leader Imran Khan launched a jail hunger strike which he said would continue until the Supreme Court justices fired by Musharraf last month are restored.

Jo Ellis: Courthouse turnips harvested lots of laughs

CARTHAGE, Mo. — I once served bowls of turnip soup, seasoned with a dash of nutmeg and a dollop of sour cream, to a group of women as the first course to an authentic pioneer meal at Kendrick House. While I received several baleful looks as the soup was served, at least some of the bowls came back to the kitchen clean. It's my guess that turnips are way down the list of people's favorite vegetables. Still, with a little bit of butter or bacon fat, a smidgen of sugar, and salt and pepper, my mother could do wonders with this often-maligned root. Gifts That Don't Kill

The conscientious consumer (which we like to think of as an ideal and not an oxymoron) can find herself beset by angst each time she steps out the door. Is this bauble/tchotchke/food item fair trade/local/sustainable? Or was it made by underfed 9-year-olds out of rare tropical hardwood and then safety-tested on unsuspecting bunnies? Heightened national awareness of climate change—which, don't get us wrong, is a very good thing—has dramatically complicated this calculus, introducing factors like shipping miles and carbon footprints. Ditto the rash of lead-related toy recalls. It's enough to drive a neurotic do-gooder into Scrooge-like, housebound, unholidayesque isolation for the duration of the season.Just in time for the biggest shopping day of the year, we're here to remind you to (a) breathe in; (b) breathe out; (c) consider that diving under the covers for the next month is not necessary.

In Brief

Dioscuri is a modular emulator designed for digital preservation. It is capable of emulating an Intel 8086-based computer platform with support for VGA-graphics, screen, keyboard, and storage devices like a virtual floppy drive and hard drive. With these components, Dioscuri successfully runs 16-bit operating systems like MS-DOS, and applications such as WordPerfect 5.1, DrawPerfect 1.1 and Norton Commander. Furthermore, it is capable of running many nostalgic DOS-games and a simple Linux kernel.

Designed for digital preservation

Based on a new concept [1] designed by the Koninklijke Bibliotheek (National Library of the Netherlands) Dioscuri offers two key features: portability and flexibility.

Dioscuri is portable because it is built on top of a virtual layer, called a virtual machine (VM).
